Chaney Sentenced to Life in Prison

Patrick Chaney, 49, of the Sapps community, was sentenced to life in prison by Pickens County Circuit Court Judge Sam Junkin on Oct. 11. Chaney was first arrested in April of 2017 on multiple charges involving a victim between the age of 12 and 16.

The charges included sexual abuse 2nd,  rape 2nd, sodomy 2nd,  allowing a child to engage in the production of obscene matter, electronic solicitation of a child, facilitating the travel of a child for an unlawful sex act, and traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act. Chaney pleaded guilty to the charge of a parent permitting a child to produce obscene materials, a Class A felony. Chaney had one prior felony conviction of Theft by Taking out of Georgia.

The sentencing hearing was held Sept. 27, when the State presented evidence related to sentencing and the defense was given the opportunity to present mitigation. Chaney was represented by John Russell IV.
