The County Commission article titled “Commission: Property Taxes to remain the Same” which appeared in the Feb. 20 edition of The Herald incorrectly stated that property taxes will remain the same, when in fact, The PROPERTY TAX MILLAGE RATES will remain the same as set out in the 2016 Tax Levy resolution. Taxes are derived from property values. Property values will not be set until summer of the tax year. Once values are set, property owners are notified by Board of Equalization notice via snail mail. Owners have 30 days from the date of this notice to file protest against the value. Taxes will not be set until August of the tax year. At which point the taxes are abstracted and turned into the Department of Revenue in Montgomery. Courtesy notices are mailed the last of September and collections begin on October 1st through December 31st of each year. Taxes are delinquent on January 1st.
