Pickens Academy introduces Scotty Pennington as head football coach

Scotty Pennington

Pickens Academy will move in a new direction this fall, as Wade Goodman steps aside to give way to new head football coach Scotty Pennington. Goodman will remain on staff as girls basketball and softball coach, while Pennington will assume the football and weightlifting duties. Pennington will also serve as assistant athletic director.

"It's a small town atmosphere and I love it," Pennington said. "It seems to make it a little more special when you've got a small group of people and everybody comes to the games and gets into it. That's kind of the thing to do on Friday nights in a small town."

This is Pennington's first head coaching position and he is currently finishing out the year at AHSAA Class 1A Red Level, where he is an assistant coach for football and baseball. The Pirates’ coach graduated from Lamar County High School in 2004 and believes that his local and small town roots will translate well going forward.

“Coming from somewhere close to here will help get some ties,” Pickens Academy headmaster Brach White said. “We need someone who will stay, because stability is huge and he’s young and energetic. People talk really good about him. We had good recommendations on him.”
