Early into what is a long and grinding baseball season, The Gordo Green Wave has yet to suffer their first loss. After wins over Fayette, Northside, and Sumiton Christian last week, Gordo's baseball team went into the weekend with a record of 6-0.
"From a coaching standpoint, we don't discuss anything but the next game," Gordo coach Jonathan Pate said. "It's a lot of the same kids that play football and it's just a good group of kids out there. We have some older guys in leadership roles who are doing a good job keeping everybody focused."
Gordo, 18 Fayette, 3
The Green Wave went on a tear in Tuesday's game at Fayette County, as Clay Herring drove in five runs on two hits in Gordo's 18-3 win. Ben Capps pitched a solid game on the mound as well, allowing just two runs on three hits and striking out three through three innings. The Green Wave would run-rule Fayette after the fifth inning, aided by a nine run third inning.
"A lot of times, this early in the year, you rely more on your pitching," Pate said. "We've pitched really well, but we've also swung the bats pretty good. I think we're running the bases really well and the kids are just having fun playing baseball. I'll be glad when warmer weather gets here because usually they play better."
