Henry Trejo, a seventh grader from Gordo High School, correctly spelled the word “sword” last Wednesday morning to win the 2023 Pickens County Spelling Bee.
Six students from Pickens County gathered at the Central Office of the Pickens County Board of Education on Feb. 1 for the event. Trejo, who was also the county spelling bee winner last year, when he competed as a student at Gordo Elementary School, will now go on to the state level to represent Pickens County at the state spelling bee on March 18 on the UAB campus.
Choosing the runner-up of the bee took longer to determine as there was a tie between Tyrone Howard, a sixth grader from Aliceville Elementary School, and Nytaeveion Nunn, a seventh grader from Pickens County High School. After about eight more rounds, Howard spelled the word “scent” correctly to be named runner-up. This was the second consecutive year a tiebreaker was held to determine who the runner-up would be.
