Gordo pulled away from Carbon Hill late behind three touchdown runs by Troy Garner Jr. to help the Greenwave secure a 42-14 win over the Bulldogs. Two of Garner Jr.’s scored came in the fourth quarter to help Gordo pull away for a 28-point win.
The Greenwave scored almost immediately when Joshua Darling went into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown with 10:38 remaining in the first quarter. Gordo would take a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.
Tanner Bailey then hit J.T. Billups for a 65-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter to put the Greenwave ahead 14-0. Carbon Hill would later get on the board with 3:22 left in the second quarter when Kade Perry picked up a fumble and returned it 15 yards for a score, cutting the Gordo lead to 14-7.
The Greenwave would respond shortly after, as Garner Jr. broke free for a 51-yard touchdown to put Gordo in front 21-7. The Greenwave forced a turnover on the next Carbon Hill possession and D.J. Barnes caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Bailey to give Gordo a 28-7 halftime advantage.
The score would remain 28-7 until late in the third quarter when Jeff Atkins ran for a 15-yard touchdown to cut the Greenwave lead in half at 28-14 with just over two minutes to go in the quarter.
Garner Jr. would hit paydirt early in the fourth quarter, as he scored a seven-yard touchdown with 11:28 remaining in the game to give Gordo a 35-14 lead. The junior scored again on a three-yard touchdown run with 8:13 left in the game, making the final margin 42-14.
