Author James Pate Gives Program at Aliceville Museum

Author James P. Pate

For the third program in its 2018-19 Authors Series Program, the Aliceville Museum hosted author and scholar James P. Pate, Ph.D. who discussed his work expanding, revising, and indexing “James Albert Pickett’s The Annotated Pickett’s History of Alabama, and Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi, from the Earliest Period.” In his very interesting program, Pate presented biographical information about Pickett and explained how the original work came to be written.

First published in 1851, “Pickett’s History,” as it is commonly known, has been available in recent decades only in poor facsimile editions. Even so, the book has been an invaluable resource for scholars studying and writing about Southeastern Indians and the expansion of the young United States into what was known as the “Old Southwest,” the present-day states of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.
