The definition of a military veteran is a person who has served for the United States Armed Forces and is no longer serving. Veterans with direct exposure to acts of military conflict may also be referred to as war veterans. A combat veteran is a person who has fought in combat during a war or a skirmish against a declared enemy and this type of veteran may still be serving in the military.
Veterans Day is observed on November 11 regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. The significance of the date is paramount to the holiday itself.
Although World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, the fighting had ceased seven moths earlier when an armistice (a temporary cessation of hostilities) between the Allied forces and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
