Gordo suffered through two straight defeats to Mobile Christian in the AHSAA football playoffs in 2016 and 2017. The Leopards also defeated the Greenwave in the semifinals of last year’s baseball playoffs. Gordo went to Mobile with one thing on its mind Friday, extracting revenge.
“I wouldn’t call it revenge,” Gordo head coach Ryan Lolley said last week after the Wicksburg win. “It’s the playoffs and we are going to be prepared and try to beat everyone we play, but that (the last two years) does get us a little more fired up to play them.”
The Leopards entered the game at 10-1 and ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, with their only loss coming to defending 4A state champion UMS-Wright.
Fired up, Gordo was, as the Greenwave jumped on top of Mobile Christian early when quarterback Tanner Bailey found J.T. Billups for a 33-yard touchdown with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter. Mobile Christian would score on the ensuing drive, however, as Nickolas Ellis ran for a 5-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 4:20 left in the opening quarter.
The Leopards would take a 10-7 lead into halftime, as the second quarter’s only score was an 18-yard field goal by Judson Duke with 7:46 left in the second quarter. Neither team would score in the third quarter, as the Greenwave entered the final quarter trailing by three.
Gordo would score early in the fourth quarter, as Bailey directed a seven-play, 67-yard drive, capped by a 49-yard touchdown pass to Troy Garner Jr. However, the extra-point attempt failed, giving the Greenwave a 13-10 advantage with 9:45 left.
