Out of the Mouths of Babes

BY TIM MCCOOLPastor, Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church

Recently at Bethlehem one of the preachers preached a sermon from Mt.6:34: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” The thrust of the message was not listening to worry and fear, but deal with what we have in front of us each day, rather than stressing over what may or may not occur tomorrow.

I know at least one of my children was paying attention. A few nights later at home we somehow fell into one of my least favorite activities – moving furniture! One of the primary reasons I loathe this is because I know whatever furniture we move will not stay there long and we will have to move it again. You see, my wife, probably like yours, loves to move furniture around. And in all fairness, she is great at placing furniture in just the right location to make it look perfect in a room.

But on the downside, there are many times I have come home after dark, everyone in the bed, and go traipsing through the den on my memorized path, only to trip over some furniture that had been relocated without warning me. I even remember once when she was pregnant, she couldn’t wait until I got home to move a heavy piece of furniture – so she sat down on the floor and pushed it to a new location with her legs. Now that is wanting to move furniture!

So anyway, as I was grumbling and complaining (and disputing with her) over moving a heavy piece of furniture to a different wall, and I said, “It won’t stay there long, we will be moving it in just a few days…” That is when my 13-year-old daughter who was listening to the sermon Sunday, looked at me and said with a big, wide grin, “Now Daddy, you don’t need to worry about tomorrow, just deal with the trouble you have today.”
