Well, guess who is coming to DJ for the Mayberry Sock Hop in Gordo on April 21? Yep. None other than Floyd the Barber. I mean, who knew Floyd could work his way around a turntable? Apparently, he’s been doing it since high school.

Allan Newsome, the tribute artist impersonating Floyd the Barber from Mayberry told me via phone interview from his home in Huntsville, Ala., he and our Gordo friend Kenneth Junkin often ride together to events. “One day we were talking, and he found out I used to DJ school dances after football games in high school.” The idea for a Sock Hop was born and took off from there.

Mr. Newsome has been doing the character Floyd Lawson from “The Andy Griffith Show” since about 1994. “I did it one time and thought that would be it,” he said. “It is a fun hobby. Not really a career, I’m not really making enough money for it to be a career, but I’ve met original cast members. And the fans. The fans you get to meet. Fans with a spirit of friendship and caring for each other. It gives you a lot of hope for the world.”
