The Lady Wave finished off their regular season schedule with a 10-7 win over Winfield — ranked 5th in Class 4A — on senior night Tuesday night. Gordo had just lost to Winfield 4-2 in the WAC tournament on April 20th, but returned the favor on Tuesday, the last home game in a Green Wave uniform for Bethany Vintson, Halli Koon, and Anna Kate Dykes.
"Anna Kate came from PA two years ago, but with Halli and Bethany, this was my first true senior class (at Gordo)," Gordo coach Greg Kosloff said. "Each year, including my 12 that I spent at Holy Spirit Catholic, I would always say ‘this is the best senior class I've ever had,’ but this is the best senior class I've had. Halli and Bethany's leadership has improved leaps and bounds this year. Halli has been a captain the past two years and Bethany was named a captain this year and their leadership working with the younger girls and working with the JV girls has been tremendous. I always miss our seniors, but this group we're really going to miss."
Winfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Anna Kate Crumpton hit a three-run home run with two outs to score Alana Ballard and C'era Beck.
Gordo would respond in the bottom of the first when Halli Koon scored on an error by Winfield's Sara Beth Cotton, followed by an Ansley Wells single to third base that scored Kaylee Quimby and cut the deficit to 3-2. Bethany Vintson then singled to score Quimby and tie the game at 3-3 after one inning.
The Lady Pirates went back in front 5-3 in the top of the second inning when Andrea Harbin smacked a home run over the left field fence, sending Grace Culpepper home as well.
Quimby singled on a ground ball to second base and Anna Kate Dykes scored to cut the Winfield lead to 5-4 after the second inning.
Andrea Harbin tripled in the top of the third inning and score Cotton and Culpepper to push the Lady Pirates lead to 7-4. Lynnsey Horton doubled on a fly ball to center in the bottom of the third, sending Vintson home to make the score 7-5. The Lady Wave inched a bit closer in the bottom of the fourth when Sutton hit a ground ball to second base, scoring Koon to cut the deficit to 7-6. A Vintson single that scored Quimby would tie the game at 7-7 at the end of the fourth inning.
