Mrs. Amy Glenn’s third graders at Aliceville Elementary School have been busy for the last 21 days in watching embryos grow into little chicks that have now hatched. Mrs. Glenn enjoys giving her students hands-on activities that present them with opportunities that they would not normally have in their learning environment.

“I just remember having this experience as a fourth-grade girl myself, and that was 45 years ago,” said Glenn. It was such a meaningful experience. My husband and I have a small farm in Gordo. I thought what a great opportunity it would be to have the kids incubate eggs. So, I got Dr. Jackson to help locate an incubator from the College and Career Center. My neighbor down the street donated 27 silky eggs. The kids were all on board.” The class

started incubating eggs on a Sunday and for the next 21 days, they have been caring for and eagerly watching the process. Glenn taught the children that if you take care of the eggs well, most of them will hatch into chicks.
