Pickens Academy fell to 0-3 on the season as the Pirates dropped their Thursday night contest to the newly founded Success Unlimited Academy 26-8. PA was without starting quarterback Seth Peeks, who was injured in last week’s contest against Coosa Valley Academy.

Sophomore William Parker would get his first start at quarterback and finished 4-of-8 passing for 100 yards with two long passes coming to receiver Austin Goodman.

“They were just so much more athletic than we were,” Pickens Academy head coach Wade Goodman said. “Their quarterback was probably about 6-4 and 225 and he wanted to go to the house with it, he went to the house with it.”

The score was 14-0 in favor of the Mustangs until early in the third quarter when Success Unlimited fumbled a punt, which was recovered by the Mustangs in the end zone, cutting the lead to 14-2.

Trailing 14-2 with just over six minutes to go in the game, the Pirates were at the Mustangs 7-yard line and hoping to cut the lead to one possession when they fumbled and turned the ball over. Success Unlimited then went down the field and scored to make the score 20-2.

Pickens Academy would then drive down the field and score on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Parker, cutting the Mustangs’ lead to 20-8. Success Unlimited would drive down the field and add one more score to win the game 26-8.

“Penalties kept us in it,” Goodman said. “They probaby had 25 penalties and probably about four of them coming on touchdown runs.”
