No public schools will hold graduation in May in Pickens County because of concerns over the COVID-19 virus, it was revealed at the May 13 meeting of the Pickens County Board of Education, but they could occur in June or as late as July.
(Pickens Academy will hold its graduation on this Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the McGee-Hughes-Wright Stadium. Social distancing will be observed.)
Superintendent of Education Jamie Chapman said he is leaving the dates for graduation to the individual high school principals. He said if the principals can come up with a plan to hold graduation in early or the middle of June and still observe social distancing, it will have to be presented to him and be approved by the Board. The state is recommending graduation be held in open-air venues, like football stadiums.
