Mayor Mickey Walker Visits First Graders at Pickens Academy

Mayor Mickey Walker visited Mrs. Rachel Burkhalter’s First Grade classroom at Pickens Academy on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Walker spoke to the first graders about the roles of elected officials, police officers and other leaders in the community. The students and the mayor enjoyed this informative visit.

Lady Pirates suffer heartbreaking Elite Eight loss to Lowndes

The Lady Pirates fought back from a four-point deficit with just over a minute left to take a one-point lead, however, Lowndes Academy would score with 25 seconds left in the game to win 31-30.

“It’s a tough loss and it needs to hurt,” Pickens Academy head coach Wade Goodman said. “When they hurt like that and we’ve got four juniors and a couple sophomores coming back, that should make them get in that gym and get better. We didn’t do that this year. It needs to hurt so bad that it gets them in the gym.”

PA Girls Earn Third Place in Southern Tournament

The Pickens Academy Lady Pirates took third place in the annual Southern Christmas tournament in Greensboro last weekend after falling to Southern Academy 36-35 in the opening game. PA wrapped up the tournament on Saturday morning with a 34-18 win over Patrician Academy.

“From the first game to this game, its only been three games, but I feel like we’ve gotten better every game,” Pickens Academy head coach Wade Goodman said. “Some of the girls are starting to get more confident with their shot.”

Pickens Academy Boys Finish Third in Nucor Tournament

Pickens Academy (1-1) kicked off its 2018-19 basketball season by finishing in third-place at the Nucor Thanksgiving tournament at Stillman College a couple weeks ago. The Pirates lost Banks Academy 68-54 in the opener, but came back the next night and defeated North River Christian 55-46.

Pickens Academy head coach Jeremy Pate said he was excited for his team to pick up its first win of the year, but said the team still has a long way to go.

Three PA Players Selected to Play in AISA All-Star Game

Pickens Academy had three players selected to participate in the 2018 AISA All-Star baseball and softball games in Montgomery this week. Lauren Duckworth and Allison Latham were selected to play in the senior softball game, while Austin Goodman was chosen to play in the junior baseball game. This is Duckworth and Latham’s second trip to the all-star game, as the duo was selected to play in the junior all-star game last year.
