Thursday night’s ‘Eight Mile War’ was one of the better recently, as Pickens County would not go away this year. The 20-13 Gordo win is the closest Pickens County has come to winning since the Tornadoes won 33-22 en route to a state championship.

Gordo knew it had a running back it could depend on coming into the 2018 season. What the Greenwave didn’t know was that Troy Garner Jr. would make scoring touchdowns look as easy as calling Geico to save money on car insurance. All analogies aside, Garner might just be the insurance that a young Gordo team needs when it comes to picking up a first down or crossing the orange pylon. The junior running back has now scored three touchdowns or more in three of the Greenwave’s five games this season.

Gordo found itself in an unfamiliar position last week after falling to region foe Winfield, taking their record to 1-2. The Greenwave righted the ship on Friday, however, going to Oakman and coming away with a crucial region win behind Troy Garner Jr.’s 214 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

At the Gordo City Council meeting, September 10, the mayor read into the minutes a proclamation stating September 24 as Family Day in Gordo, and the week of September 23 – September 29 as Family Week. Gordo dropped to 1-2 on the season Friday night, as the Greenwave fell to Winfield 18-14 for their first region loss since falling to Fayette County on September 13, 2013.
Winfield took an early 6-0 lead when James Jenkins ran for a one-yard touchdown with 7:02 left in the first quarter. The Greenwave would take a 7-6 lead just before halftime, as Tanner Bailey found Ben Capps for a two-yard touchdown pass with 1:24 remaining in the first half. The touchdown capped an 11-play, 67-yard drive.
A large amount of marijuana and methamphetamine was uncovered and confiscated during a routine traffic stop Sept. 2 in Gordo.
