Tariffs on Canadian Newsprint Costing Jobs

A New York-based equity firm filed a complaint in 2017 to the U.S. Department of Commerce after buying a paper mill in Longview, Wash. The complaint alleged Canadian newsprint companies had an unfair advantage over U.S. domestic mills because of Canadian subsidies. The Department of Commerce responded by levying a tariff on uncoated groundwood paper, the official name for newsprint.

Carrollton Receives Grant for Lagoon Improvements

Gov. Kay Ivey has announced grants totaling $1.55 million to help eight Alabama communities address and improve infrastructure. The town of Carrollton is one of the eight communities who received a grant. Carrollton was awarded $150,000 to rehabilitate the town’s wastewater treatment plant lagoons.

The funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) will enable the communities to improve sewer systems, roads, and other concerns.

BOE and Aliceville Attempt Compromise on School Closing

Aliceville Middle School will open with seventh and eighth graders until Aliceville High School’s facilities can be brought up to par. The school will then close. Fifth and sixth graders will start the school year in the elementary building.

The closing of the Aliceville Middle School has been a subject of great contention after Pickens County School Superintendent Jamie Chapman recommended the school’s fifth and sixth grades be moved to Aliceville Elementary School and the seventh and eighth grades be transferred to Aliceville High School due to declining enrollment numbers and funding issues stemming from those numbers. This will essentially shut down Aliceville Middle School.

Unidentified Boy May Have Been From Alabama

On September 25, 1998 skeletal remains of an unidentified boy were found in Mebane, Orange County, North Carolina.

He was found in heavy brush near a billboard sign along Industrial Drive which is a service road adjacent to the Westbound lanes of Interstate 85 and Interstate 40.

The child had been deceased at this location for several months. The remains were identified as a male, 9-12 years old. His race is Caucasian or Hispanic. He stood approximately 4’11” tall and had straight brown hair.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Gordo to Mark 175 Years

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Gordo will mark its 175th year of service to the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, starting at 10:00 a.m. The service will include some sharing of Mt Pleasant history, former pastors, staff, and those who have been ordained at Mt. Pleasant will be invited to attend. Bro. Glenn Sandifer will preach the sermon, and Keith Mullenix will lead the music. There will be a fellowship meal after the service.
